The mid twentieth century marked a distinct era in United States coinage, captured beautifully in the circulating half dollars minted from 1948 to 1963. Breaking from the traditional allegorical figures of Liberty, these coins feature the portrait of Benjamin Franklin on the obverse. This design choice honors one of America's most famous founding fathers, accompanied by the legible inscriptions of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Turning the coin over reveals a detailed depiction of the historic Liberty Bell, complete with its famous crack. To the right of the bell, a small eagle is visible, satisfying the legal requirement for the denomination. The reverse also bears the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and HALF DOLLAR. These fifty cent pieces are composed of 90% silver, with two of these half dollars combining to represent a face value of one dollar and containing approximately 0.715 troy ounces of precious metal.
