The tiny United States one dollar gold coin underwent a significant design evolution, culminating in the Type 3 variety. This small treasure contains 0.048375 ounces of gold, struck with a purity level of 0.900. Because many of these historic pieces were melted down over the decades, the surviving population is far smaller than the original production numbers suggest, making well-preserved examples highly prized by historians. On the obverse side, the profile of Liberty faces left, adorned with an stylized Native American feather headdress. Encircling this portrait is the bold inscription "United States of America". The reverse side is framed by a delicate wreath, which surrounds the central placement of the one-dollar denomination and the specific year of issue. These delicate gold pieces were struck at several different branches of the United States Mint, including the main facility in Philadelphia as well as the southern and western branch mints in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and San Francisco. This particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), indicating a superb level of preservation that allows the fine details of the wreath and the feathers of the headdress to be appreciated just as they looked when leaving the coining press.
