Struck in the medieval Levant, this silver denier originates from the Principality of Antioch, one of the prominent Crusader States. Minted between 1149 and 1163 AD during the era of Bohemond III, the coin offers a direct visual connection to the age of medieval knights and castles. The obverse of the coin displays a striking depiction of a Frankish knight looking to the left, wearing a traditional protective mail coif. This military imagery reflects the turbulent environment of the twelfth-century Crusader territories. On the reverse, the coin features a short Maltese Cross, a symbol deeply associated with the era. Surrounding the cross are Latin legends alongside a moneyer signature, marking the authority under which this silver piece was produced.
