(1570-1690) Japan Tosa Province Gold Koban AU
During the historic Edo period of Japan, local feudal lords in Tosa province minted their own distinctive currency. This gold Koban, valued at one Ryo, is a remarkable survivor from that era, dating from between 1570 and 1690. Unlike the highly standardized coinage of central authorities, these regional pieces reflect the localized power and economic autonomy of the provincial lords. The design of this gold piece is uniquely minimalist and functional. The obverse side is decorated with a series of circular treasury seals and official stamps, which served to verify the weight and purity of the precious metal. In striking contrast to the stamped obverse, the reverse side of the coin remains entirely blank. Preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition, this gold piece offers a direct look at the regional monetary craftsmanship of early Japan.
