1749 Austria Gold Salzburg 1/4 Ducat MS-62 NGC
Struck in the mid eighteenth century, this Austrian gold quarter-ducat offers a window into the rich history of Salzburg. The coin is composed of 0.986 fine gold, containing 0.028 troy ounces of precious metal. Having survived more than two and a half centuries in exceptional condition, this piece has been certified in Mint State 62 condition. The obverse of the coin features the right-facing portrait of the regional ruler, Andreas Jakob. On the reverse, the design depicts Saint Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg, shown seated while holding a salt box and a crozier, which is a stylized pastoral staff. Below this depiction, a small ornamental cartouche displays the fractional value of the coin. This specimen was produced by the Austrian Mint, representing a denomination with deep historical roots. Gold ducats first appeared in the Austrian region during the early seventeenth century or perhaps even earlier, making this 1749 issue part of a long-standing monetary tradition.
