1768-Mo MF Mexico Silver 8 Reales "Pillar Dollar" AU-50 NGC

0.7980 troy oz .917 1768 NGC

Struck in the historic Casa de Moneda de Mexico, this 1768 silver coin represents one of the most recognizable and widely circulated designs of the colonial era. Known popularly as the Pillar Dollar, this piece of currency is minted from 0.798 troy ounces of silver with a purity of 0.917. It has survived the centuries in a remarkably preserved state, certified by professional graders as About Uncirculated 50. The obverse of this 8 Reales coin displays a prominent crowned shield, which is flanked by the denomination and the assayer marks MF. On the reverse, the design showcases two crowned globes representing the Old and New Worlds. These globes are positioned between the crowned Pillars of Hercules, which are wrapped in banners bearing the Latin phrase meaning further beyond. The year of minting, 1768, is clearly struck at the bottom of this intricate reverse design. Cataloged by numismatists as KM-105, this coin offers a direct window into the global commerce of the eighteenth century.
