1803 Half Cent Good
In the earliest years of the United States Mint, the half cent represented the smallest denomination of circulating currency. This 1803 copper issue, preserved in Good condition, offers a fascinating window into the young republic's coinage. The design showcases a classic representation of Liberty on the obverse, facing right with her hair flowing back, a motif central to the identity of early American coinage. The reverse of the coin features a delicate wreath enclosing the denomination, written as "HALF CENT". Encircling this central wreath is the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". Striking these copper pieces in Philadelphia was a hands-on, manual process, making each surviving specimen a distinct testament to early nineteenth-century manufacturing.
