1808-1836 Bust Half Dollar XF/Better

0.3868 troy oz .8924 Extra Fine or Better

In the early decades of the United States, the half dollar was a cornerstone of daily commerce. Minted between 1808 and 1836, the Bust Half Dollar represents a fascinating era of American coinage, showcasing the evolving artistic identity of a young nation. Each of these fifty-cent pieces is struck in 0.8924 fine silver, containing 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal, and is backed as official legal tender by the United States government. The obverse of the coin displays a classic profile of Lady Liberty, facing right, with her hair flowing beneath a cap. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed above her. This elegant depiction was created by designer John Reich, whose work defined the look of United States silver coinage during this period. On the reverse, Reich composed a powerful national symbol: an eagle with wings spread, bearing a shield upon its chest. In its talons, the eagle grasps both an olive branch of peace and a cluster of arrows, representing strength and readiness. The traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is draped above the eagle, while the denomination "50 C." is clearly marked at the bottom, surrounded by the legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". These surviving examples, preserved in Extra Fine or better condition, offer a remarkably clear window into the craftsmanship of the early republic.
