In the early years of United States coinage, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of gold five-dollar pieces, known as half eagles. Among these issues is the 1808 Capped Bust gold coin, which carries a compelling physical record of early American minting practices. Specifically, this coin features the 1808/7 overdate variety, cataloged by specialists as the BD-2, Tall 1. This designation indicates that the dies from the previous year were modified and reused, leaving a visible trace of the digit seven beneath the newly punched eight. Crafted from just over a quarter ounce of gold, specifically 0.2577 troy ounces, this piece survived the era with its original details exceptionally well-preserved. It has been certified in an outstanding state of preservation, graded as Mint State 64+ (MS-64+). The lack of a mintmark on the coin is characteristic of its origin, as the Philadelphia Mint was the sole operating facility at the time and did not use mintmarks to identify its work.
