In the early years of United States coinage, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of five dollar gold pieces, today known as Half Eagles. The 1808 issue is particularly compelling to scholars and enthusiasts because of a visible overdate, where the 1808 date was struck directly over a remaining 1807 die. This specific coin has survived the centuries in an exceptional About Uncirculated 58 condition, preserving the intricate details of its historic design. The obverse features the classic Capped Head portrait, a representation of Liberty wearing a soft cap. On the reverse, the design showcases an eagle with the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination indicated as 5 D.
