Struck during a pivotal year in American history, this 1812 half dollar showcases the early artistic direction of the United States Mint. Minted in Philadelphia, the coin is composed of 89.24 percent silver, containing approximately 0.3868 troy ounces of the precious metal. Despite its circulated Very Good condition, the essential elements of its historic engraving remain clearly visible, offering a tangible connection to the early nineteenth century. The obverse side displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair draped softly and adorned with a cap inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the bust, representing the original colonies, with the date 1812 anchored at the bottom. Designed by John Reich, this depiction of Liberty was a staple of early American silver coinage. On the reverse, Reich's detailed heraldic eagle takes center stage. The eagle is depicted with a patriotic shield across its chest, clutching a symbolic olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. Above the eagle, a scroll bears the national motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the legend STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination of 50 cents encircle the design.
