Struck at the Philadelphia Mint during a momentous era in United States history, this 1814 Capped Bust half dollar offers a tangible connection to the early Republic. With a total mintage of 1,039,075, these early silver pieces were workhorses of American commerce, making well-preserved survivors highly intriguing to study. This particular specimen has been certified in Extremely Fine 40 (XF-40) condition, showing that while it entered circulation, it was spared the heavy wear that claimed so many of its contemporaries. Composed of 0.8924 fine silver, containing approximately 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal, the coin features the classic Capped Bust design on its obverse, accompanied by the 1814 date. The reverse displays an eagle holding an olive branch and arrows, flanked by the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and the denomination marked as 50 C.
