The year 1816 marked a fresh chapter for United States copper coinage, introducing a distinct aesthetic to the nation's pocket change. This copper one cent piece is a fascinating survivor from that era, preserved in Very Fine condition. It showcases the transition in early American coin design, offering a tangible connection to the daily commerce of the early nineteenth century. On the obverse side, the coin features the Matron Head portrait of Liberty, a design conceived by John Reich and Robert Scot. Liberty faces right, her hair bound by a cord, presenting a more mature depiction than earlier versions. The reverse is defined by a delicate wreath that encircles the denomination, with the words ONE CENT clearly visible at its center. Wrapping around the outer edge of the reverse is the proud inscription, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, framing the central wreath.
