This early American silver half dollar, minted in Philadelphia, showcases a compelling design from the young republic. Struck in 1818, the coin belongs to the Capped Bust series and features an intriguing overdate, specifically the 1818 over 7 variety with a small second 8. This technical detail highlights the hand-crafted nature of die preparation during this era, where previous years' dies were sometimes updated and reused. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a cap, surrounded by stars. On the reverse, a detailed eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. Above the eagle, the scroll displays the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the denomination is indicated at the bottom as 50 C. This piece is composed of 89.24 percent silver, containing approximately 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal, and survives in Very Fine condition.
