In the early decades of the United States, the copper cent was a fundamental tool of daily commerce. The 1818 large cent, minted in Philadelphia, represents an intriguing era of early American coining. Struck in pure copper, this substantial coin belongs to the Matron Head Liberty series, featuring a distinct portrait style that characterized the nation's lowest-denomination currency during this period. The obverse of the coin displays the Matron Head representation of Liberty, facing right, surrounded by stars with the year 1818 positioned below the bust. On the reverse, a classic wreath encircles the central denomination, which is spelled out as One Cent. Encircling the wreath along the outer border is the bold inscription United States of America. This particular specimen survives in Good condition, showing the honest wear and softened details of a coin that actively circulated in the early nineteenth century.
