In 1823, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 14,485 gold half eagle coins. Today, surviving examples of these five dollar gold pieces are exceptionally rare, especially in well-preserved conditions. This particular specimen has survived the centuries in an extraordinary state of preservation, graded as Mint State 64 (MS-64). The obverse of the coin features the classic Capped Bust design, where Liberty faces left wearing a stylized cap inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, with the date 1823 stamped below. Because the Philadelphia Mint did not use mint marks during this era, the coin's origin is indicated solely by its design and historical records. On the reverse, a proud eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing peace and defense. The legendary motto 'E PLURIBUS UNUM' is draped on a scroll above the eagle, surrounded by the legend 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and the denomination '5 D.' at the bottom.
