Struck in the early decades of the United States, this 1824 half dollar represents a classic era of American silver coinage. Minted in Philadelphia with a composition of approximately 89 percent silver, the coin contains about 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal. Having survived two centuries, this specimen is preserved in Very Fine condition, showing clear details of its intricate nineteenth-century artistry. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair flowing beneath a draped cap. Above her image, the word LIBERTY is inscribed, while the date 1824 is positioned clearly below. This side of the coin captures the early American aesthetic of personifying freedom through classical imagery. On the reverse, a detailed eagle stands with a patriotic shield draped across its chest. In its talons, the bird grasps an olive branch alongside a cluster of arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace paired with a readiness for defense. The scroll above the eagle bears the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the denomination indicated at the bottom as 50 C.
