1826 Bust Half Dollar VG

In 1826, the Philadelphia Mint produced a fifty-cent silver coin that captures the spirit of early United States coinage. Struck in 89.24 percent silver, this Bust Half Dollar contains approximately 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal. Surviving today in Very Good condition, the coin offers a tangible look at the craftsmanship of the early nineteenth century. Designed by John Reich, the obverse of the half dollar showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a cap inscribed with her name, surrounded by stars, with the date 1826 positioned directly below her bust. The reverse side displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other, symbolizing a desire for peace alongside a readiness for defense. A shield is draped across the eagle's chest, while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is featured above. Encircling this central image are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination indicated as 50 C.
