During the middle of the nineteenth century, Mexico produced a silver coin that bridged the gap between colonial traditions and modern currency. The 4 Reales, minted between 1824 and 1897, took the place of the old Spanish Real and circulated widely before the Mexican Peso became the national standard. This particular silver issue, minted between 1827 and 1870, contains 0.3930 ounces of pure silver and has a physical presence slightly exceeding that of a United States half dollar. One side of the coin displays the classic Mexican coat of arms, showing a golden eagle perched on a cactus while grasping a snake in its beak. The surrounding inscription reads REPUBLICA MEXICANA, identifying the young nation. On the other side, a glowing Phrygian cap radiates light, serving as a powerful emblem of freedom. This reverse side also displays the denomination, the specific mint mark, the year of manufacture, the initials of the assayer, and the metal purity of 0.903 silver.
