The year 1827 marked a significant chapter in early American coinage, producing a notable silver half dollar from the Philadelphia Mint. This specific issue belongs to the Capped Bust series, a design created by John Reich. Struck in 0.8924 fine silver, the coin contains 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal. Out of a total mintage of 5,493,400 pieces, collectors have identified three distinct varieties, including the Square Base 2 version, which refers to the specific shape of the final digit in the date. On the obverse, the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a cloth cap, with the date 1827 positioned below the bust. The reverse side features a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, with a protective shield covering its chest. Above the eagle, the scroll displays the traditional motto, while the denomination is indicated at the bottom. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing moderate wear but retaining clear details of this historic era in United States minting.
