1830 Bust Half Dollar VF-30 PCGS (Small 0)

0.3868 troy oz .8924 1830 Very Fine - 30 (PCGS)

In the early decades of United States coinage, the Philadelphia Mint produced silver half dollars that captured the spirit of a young nation. This 1830 silver piece, representing the Capped Bust series, is a fascinating survivor from that era. Struck with a purity of 0.8924 silver, the coin contains 0.3868 troy ounces of precious metal and showcases the hand-crafted nuances of early nineteenth-century minting technology. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty, her hair draped in a cap inscribed with the word LIBERTY. She is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1830 positioned at the bottom. This specific coin features the Small 0 variety, a subtle die variation in the date that makes it particularly interesting to study. John Reich designed this iconic depiction of Liberty, which served as a staple of American commerce in the 1830s. On the reverse, a bold heraldic eagle is depicted with its wings spread, grasping an olive branch and a bundle of arrows in its talons. Above the eagle, a scroll bears the national motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while the denomination is indicated at the bottom as 50 C. This specimen has been certified in Very Fine 30 condition, preserving the essential design elements and offering a tangible connection to early American monetary history.
