1830 Bust Half Dollar XF (Large 0)

In 1830, the United States Mint in Philadelphia struck a silver half dollar that showcases a fascinating design variation. This coin, composed of 89.24 percent silver, is recognized by numismatists as the Large 0 variety, referring to the specific size of the final digit in the date on the obverse. On the front of the coin, a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty appears, her hair flowing beneath a cap inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below her portrait, the year 1830 is clearly struck, with the prominent final zero defining this particular variety. This side of the coin was designed by John Reich, who brought a distinct artistic sensibility to early American coinage. The reverse side presents a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, with a shield draped across its chest. Above the eagle, a scroll displays the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the surrounding inscription reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. At the very bottom, the denomination is indicated as 50 C., representing its fifty-cent face value. This specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of Reich's classic engraving from the pre-1933 era of American currency.
