During the late 1830s, the United States Mint introduced a significant technical update to its half dollar coinage, transitioning from lettered edges to a modern reeded edge. Struck in 90% silver, these fifty-cent pieces contain approximately 0.3866 troy ounces of precious metal. This short-lived series, minted only from 1836 to 1839, represents a fascinating bridge between early American coining methods and the mechanized era of production. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, with her hair cascading down her neck.
