(1837-1858) Japan Tenpo Gold Koban, 1 Ryo XF
Dating from the historic Tenpo era between 1837 and 1858, this Japanese gold Koban is a remarkable departure from the round coins familiar to many Western observers. Shaped like an elongated oval, this 1 Ryo denomination piece weighs 11.2 grams and contains approximately 0.3600 troy ounces of gold. Its physical form and surface treatment reflect the specialized minting techniques of nineteenth-century Japan, cataloged by numismatists as KM 22.b. The obverse of this gold piece is covered in a series of horizontal waves or crenulations. It features official calligraphy set within rectangular frames alongside a distinctive fan-shaped mark, showcasing the artistic and administrative traditions of the period. On the reverse, the surface is marked with various official stamps, including refinery marks and personal seals of the authorities, which served to verify the metal's purity and origin. This particular specimen has been preserved in Extra Fine condition, allowing these intricate stamped details to remain clearly visible.
