1837 Large Cent Plain Cord, Sm Letters VG

In 1837, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper one-cent piece that represents a fascinating era in early American coining. This classic Large Cent features a distinct design combination known to enthusiasts as the Plain Cord with Small Letters, offering a tangible look at the craftsmanship of the late 1830s. The obverse side of the coin displays a classic effigy of Liberty, facing left, with her hair bound. Thirteen stars encircle the central portrait, representing the original colonies, with the year 1837 clearly marked below the bust. The word LIBERTY is inscribed upon her hairband. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are positioned at the center, surrounded by a delicate wreath. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps around the outer border of the design. This particular specimen survives in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation during the pre-1933 era of American currency.
