In 1837, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper large cent that stands as a fascinating artifact of early American coinage. This substantial copper piece, which carries a face value of one cent, represents the era of circulating base-metal currency that predates the modern small cent. With a total mintage of 3,435,100 pieces, this issue is a notable survivor from the first half of the nineteenth century. The obverse of the coin showcases the Classic Head Liberty design, created by John Reich. This depiction features Liberty facing right, with her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name. The reverse displays a delicate wreath enclosing the denomination, which is rendered as ONE CENT. Circling the wreath is the bold inscription identifying the issuing nation, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
