In the decades before the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced large, heavy copper pennies that look and feel vastly different from the pocket change of today. The 1838 Large Cent represents this bygone era of American coinage, originating from the Philadelphia Mint. This specific coin belongs to the Modified Matron Head series, a design sequence that spanned the years 1835 to 1839. Scholars attribute the artistic origin of this series to either Robert Scot or John Reich. The obverse of this copper coin features a classic profile of Liberty, who wears a coronet inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse side, the denomination of ONE CENT is boldly centered inside a continuous protective wreath, which is itself encircled by the legend spelling out UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Despite the wear of time, the essential elements of this early American design remain visible, offering a tangible connection to the everyday commerce of the late 1830s.
