1838 Large Cent VG
In the late 1830s, the United States Mint produced a distinctive copper penny known to history as the Young Head Large Cent. The 1838 issue showcases a youthful profile of Liberty on its front side, facing left and surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars that represent the original colonies. This classic depiction of Liberty was crafted by either Robert Scot or John Reich, contributing to a short-lived design series that spanned from 1835 to 1839. Turning the coin over reveals the denomination of ONE CENT centered within a protective, stylized wreath. Encircling this central wreath is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular copper piece survives in Very Good condition, offering a tangible connection to the early coinage traditions of the United States.
