1838 Large Cent XF Details

0.0000 troy oz 1838 Extra Fine

In the early decades of United States coinage, copper cents were substantial pieces of metal, much larger than the pennies in circulation today. The 1838 Large Cent represents a fascinating era of American coining, minted in Philadelphia without a mint mark. This particular issue showcases the evolution of early American coin design, combining classical themes with robust metalwork. The obverse of this copper cent features a dignified profile of Liberty, facing left and encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1838 is clearly struck below the portrait. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encircles the words ONE CENT, which is surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This specimen is preserved in Extra Fine details, allowing observers to appreciate the fine lines of the wreath and the crisp lettering of the central denomination.
