1838 Reeded Edge Half Dollar XF
In 1838, the Philadelphia Mint produced a silver half dollar that marked a fascinating transition in American coinage. This fifty-cent piece features a reeded edge, a distinct departure from the lettered edges of earlier eras. Struck in 0.900 fine silver with a precious metal content of 0.3866 troy ounces, this United States sovereign coin survives today in an appealing Extra Fine state of preservation. The obverse, designed by Christian Gobrecht, showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, which is secured by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below her draped bust, the year 1838 is clearly struck. On the reverse, Gobrecht's detailed eagle dominates the center. The bird of prey is depicted with a patriotic shield across its chest, clutching an olive branch of peace in one talon and a bundle of arrows in the other. Encircling this central image are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination HALF DOL.
