1839-1891 Liberty Seated Half Dollars Fine
During a transformative era in United States history, the nation's silver coinage underwent a major aesthetic shift. The Liberty Seated half dollar, minted from 1839 to 1891, stands as a premier example of this classic design period. Struck in 90 percent pure silver, each of these fifty-cent pieces contains 0.3575 troy ounces of precious metal. These circulated specimens survive today in Fine condition, showing honest wear from their time in nineteenth-century commerce while retaining their essential design elements. The obverse of the coin features Liberty in a seated position. In her hands, she supports a staff topped with a liberty cap, while her other hand rests upon a patriotic shield. This imagery, conceived by Christian Gobrecht, became a defining motif for multiple denominations of American silver coinage during the mid-to-late 1800s. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle perched on an olive branch, clutching a trio of arrows in its talons, with a United States shield positioned over its chest. Inscriptions on the reverse include the issuing authority and the face value, rendered as "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "HALF DOL." These historic half dollars were manufactured by the United States Mint at various production facilities across the expanding country. Depending on the year of issue, individual coins may have been struck at the main mint in Philadelphia, or at branch mints in San Francisco, New Orleans, or the frontier outpost of Carson City. Each surviving coin serves as a tangible connection to the early decades of American federal coinage.
