This 1839 gold piece represents a fascinating moment in American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this five-dollar denomination is also known as a Half Eagle. It is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of the precious metal. Out of an original mintage of 118,143 pieces, this particular specimen has survived to the present day and is certified in Extra Fine 40 condition. The coin features classic design elements that define the era. The front of the coin bears the date 1839, while the reverse displays a detailed eagle design surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The face value is indicated at the bottom of the reverse as FIVE D. Because it was minted in Philadelphia during this period, it does not display a mint mark.
