Introduced for general circulation in 1840, the Liberty Seated silver dollar represents a fascinating era in United States coinage. Crafted from 0.900 fine silver and containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, this dollar coin circulated during a time of immense national transformation. As silver prices climbed in the later years of its production, these substantial coins found a new purpose, being utilized extensively in international export trade. The visual design of the coin, created by Christian Gobrecht, presents iconic American imagery on both sides. The obverse features a seated figure of Liberty, who holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand while resting her other hand upon a shield. On the reverse, an eagle is depicted with a shield across its chest, perched upon a branch while grasping three arrows.
