In 1840, the remote Dahlonega Mint in Georgia struck a limited run of gold five dollar coins. Out of a total mintage of just 22,896 pieces, this specific specimen represents a fascinating survivor from the early years of southern gold coinage. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal and stands as a testament to the era of regional branch mint production. This particular issue is recognized as the Tall D variety, distinguished by the specific style of its D mintmark on the reverse. The obverse features the classic Liberty design wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars and the 1840 date. The reverse displays an eagle with outstretched wings, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D.
