0.1209 troy oz .900 1843 NGC

This 1843 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating survivor from the pre-1933 era of United States coinage. Struck at the main minting facility in Philadelphia, this coin does not bear a mint mark. It carries a face value of two and a half dollars, minted from a composition of 90 percent gold that contains just over one-tenth of an ounce of pure precious metal (0.1209 troy ounces). The year 1843 is clearly visible on the obverse, anchoring the piece in a pivotal decade of American history. Out of an original mintage of 100,546 pieces, very few have survived the intervening decades in such exceptional preservation. This particular specimen has been certified in AU-58 condition, denoting a coin that retains nearly all of its original design details with only the slightest traces of wear on the highest points.
