This 1843 gold quarter eagle represents a fascinating look into early American coinage. Struck in Philadelphia, this coin is composed of 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. Because it was produced at the main Philadelphia facility, it features no mint mark, a traditional practice for the nation's primary minting facility during the nineteenth century. Having survived in lightly circulated condition, it retains much of the detail from its original striking. The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word "LIBERTY", and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year of production, 1843, is positioned directly below the bust. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its chest. The bird holds its place amidst the surrounding inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the abbreviated denomination "2 1/2 D." at the bottom.
