This gold five dollar coin, minted in 1843, represents a classic era of American coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece does not bear a mint mark, which distinguishes it from those produced at branch mints during the same period. The coin is composed of 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. Out of a total mintage of 611,205 pieces, this particular specimen has survived the decades and is graded in About Uncirculated (AU-55) condition. The design is the work of Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The reverse displays a proud heraldic eagle with a shield draped across its breast. Surrounding the central eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the five-dollar denomination, rendered as FIVE D.
