Struck in the pre-1933 era of American coinage, this 1844 five-dollar gold piece represents a classic period of United States minting. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin does not bear a mint mark, which distinguishes it from issues of other branch mints of the era. The coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.2419 troy ounces of the precious metal, and was part of an original mintage of 340,330 pieces. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, whose hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies, with the date 1844 positioned below. This elegant depiction was created by designer Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its breast. The bird is surrounded by the legend United States of America, while the abbreviated denomination Five D. is positioned at the bottom. This specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the intricate details of both the obverse portrait and the reverse heraldry for modern observers to appreciate.
