In the mid nineteenth century, the United States government issued copper coins that were significantly larger than the pennies we carry today. The 1844 Large Cent is a striking representative of this era, minted in Philadelphia from pure copper. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing the enduring strength of its design elements over more than a century and a half. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is styled in a neat braid, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the 1840s. Below the portrait, the year 1844 is clearly struck, anchoring the piece in a pivotal decade of American growth. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encircles the denomination of One Cent. Encircling this central wreath, the legend United States of America is boldly inscribed around the perimeter. The simplicity of the design, combined with the substantial weight of pure copper, makes this coin a fascinating window into early American manufacturing and daily commerce.
