In 1845, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 417,099 gold half eagles, each struck with a face value of five dollars. These pieces represent a classic era of American coinage, crafted from 0.900 fine gold and containing 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. Because they were minted at the main Philadelphia facility, they bear no mint mark. The obverse side of this gold coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1845 is struck below the bust. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows, its chest protected by a shield. The eagle is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the five-dollar denomination.
