1846-D $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle MS-61 PCGS

0.1209 troy oz .900 1846 PCGS

In 1846, the branch mint in Dahlonega, Georgia, struck a mere 19,303 gold quarter eagles, making any surviving specimen a notable find for historical coin enthusiasts. This specific coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing just over 0.12 troy ounces of precious metal. Given the rugged conditions of the era and the active circulation of gold coinage in the American South, finding an example that has escaped heavy wear is an exciting occurrence. This specimen has been certified in Mint State 61 (MS-61) condition, indicating it has survived more than a century and a half with its original mint luster intact. The obverse features the classic Liberty design, dated 1846. On the reverse, the coin bears the distinctive 'D' mint mark, identifying its origin from the Georgia facility, alongside the denomination abbreviated as '2 1/2 D.' and the surrounding inscription 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA'.
