In 1847, the Philadelphia Mint produced a run of 915,981 gold five-dollar coins, commonly known as the Half Eagle. These pieces were struck from a durable alloy containing 90 percent gold, meaning each coin contains just under a quarter ounce of pure gold (0.2419 troy ounces). Because they were produced at the main Philadelphia facility, these coins do not carry a mint mark. Finding one of these mid-nineteenth-century gold pieces in exceptional condition is a rare treat for enthusiasts. This particular specimen has survived the decades in outstanding form, earning a certified grade of Mint State 62 (MS-62).
