1849 Large Cent AU
In the mid nineteenth century, American pocket change looked vastly different than it does today. The 1849 Large Cent is a striking representative of this era, minted in pure copper at the Philadelphia facility. This substantial coin showcases the artistry of Christian Gobrecht, presenting a distinct aesthetic from a formative period in United States coinage. The obverse side displays a refined depiction of Liberty, her hair styled in neat braids secured by a cord. Thirteen stars encircle this portrait, with the year 1849 clearly struck at the bottom. This design reflects the evolving neoclassical artistic trends of the late 1840s. On the reverse, a detailed wreath encircles the denomination. The words ONE CENT are nestled in the center of the leafy branches. Encircling this central wreath is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, completing a balanced and traditional design. This specimen survives in an impressive Almost Uncirculated state, preserving the fine details of Gobrecht's engraving.
