In 1850, the Philadelphia Mint struck a significant run of 1,170,261 gold coins with a face value of 20 dollars. This impressive issue, composed of 90 percent gold and containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal, represents a monumental era in American coinage. Because it bears no mint mark, we know this specific piece originated from the main coining facility in Philadelphia. The obverse of the coin presents a profile of Lady Liberty. Her hair is secured by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and a ring of 13 stars encircles her portrait, representing the original colonies. The year 1850 is stamped boldly at the bottom. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle carries a protective shield on its chest. The bird is framed by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the upper rim, while the denomination is displayed below.
