0.9675 troy oz .900 1850 Almost Unc (PCGS)

In 1850, a new era of American coinage began with the introduction of the twenty-dollar gold piece, also known as the Double Eagle. This massive coin, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, contains nearly a full troy ounce of gold, specifically 0.9675 ounces, with a purity of 0.900. Its creation marked a significant moment in United States monetary history, offering a substantial and beautiful canvas for classic American artistry. The obverse features a profile of Lady Liberty facing left, her hair styled in a classic bun with loose curls cascading down her neck. She wears a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and thirteen stars encircle her profile, representing the original colonies. The date 1850 is clearly struck at the bottom. On the reverse, a grand heraldic eagle with spread wings dominates the design. A shield is placed over the eagle's breast, and a halo of thirteen stars sits beneath a canopy of rays above its head. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS. This particular specimen is certified in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the intricate details of its first year of issue.
