In 1850, the United States Mint in Philadelphia began regular production of a massive new denomination: the twenty-dollar gold piece, also known as the Double Eagle. This specific specimen survives from that historic inaugural year of issue, representing a major milestone in American numismatic history. Out of a mintage of 1,170,261 pieces struck at the Philadelphia facility, this coin has been certified in Very Fine 35 condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining its essential design details. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a bun with loose curls cascading down her neck. She wears a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1850 positioned below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle behind a shield, holding an olive branch and arrows, with the country name UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounding the design. Because this coin was struck at the main Philadelphia Mint, it does not bear a mint mark.
