0.1209 troy oz .900 1851 Almost Unc

This United States gold coin, minted in Philadelphia in 1851, represents a historic era of American coinage. With a face value of 2.50 dollars, the piece is struck from 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. It has survived the decades in an Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the details of its mid nineteenth century craftsmanship. The obverse features a left facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait, the date 1851 is clearly visible. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a shield draped across its chest. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination 2 1/2 D. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this enduring design was struck by the United States Mint over a long span of years, from 1840 to 1907.
