In 1851, the Philadelphia Mint produced 377,505 gold five-dollar coins, commonly known as half eagles. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, this issue represents a classic era of American coinage, carrying a total of 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was minted at the main facility in Philadelphia, the coin features no mint mark. The obverse side presents a left-facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1851 is clearly stamped below the portrait. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its breast. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination FIVE D. at the bottom. This particular specimen has survived in an exceptional About Uncirculated AU-58 state, preserving the intricate details of both the Liberty portrait and the heraldic reverse.
