1851-O Three Cent Silver AU

In 1851, the United States Mint introduced an unusually small denomination: the three-cent silver piece. This particular example hails from the New Orleans Mint, bearing the distinctive 'O' mint mark. Struck from a composition of 75 percent silver and 25 percent copper, this tiny coin contains just 0.0193 troy ounces of precious metal, making it one of the thinnest and lightest silver coins in American history. The obverse features a striking six-pointed star, at the center of which sits a heraldic shield. The year 1851 is clearly inscribed below this central design. On the reverse, the coin displays the Roman numeral III, representing its face value, nestled within an ornate, stylized C-shaped design element. James Longacre designed these elegant motifs, creating a highly detailed aesthetic on an incredibly small canvas. Finding these early silver three-cent pieces in Almost Uncirculated condition is a treat for those who appreciate the artistry of mid-nineteenth-century coinage. Out of a total mintage of 5,447,400, relatively few of these delicate pieces survived the decades in such a well-preserved state, offering a fascinating window into the pre-Civil War monetary system.
