1851 Three Cent Silver BU

0.0193 troy oz .750 1851 Brilliant Unc

In 1851, the United States Mint introduced a remarkably diminutive denomination that would secure a unique place in American numismatic history. Strikingly small and incredibly light, this three cent piece represents the absolute minimum weight and physical size for any silver issue ever produced by the nation's minting facilities. This particular specimen survives in brilliant uncirculated condition, preserving the delicate details of its original manufacture. The design, created by James B. Longacre, showcases a bold six-pointed star on the obverse, with a protective shield placed directly at its center. Surrounding this central motif is the legend indicating the issuing nation, alongside the clear date of 1851 at the bottom. The reverse of the coin features an elegant, stylized Roman numeral III nestled within an ornamental C-shaped device, signifying its three-cent face value. Classified as a Type I variety, this coin was struck from an alloy composed of 75 percent silver and 25 percent copper, yielding a total precious metal content of 0.0193 troy ounces. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, which did not utilize a mint mark at the time, this tiny silver piece offers a fascinating glimpse into the mid nineteenth century experimentation with fractional currency.
